EC 2000

UVa's Department of Science, Technology, and Society (formerly Division of Technology, Culture, and Communication), with the help and funding of the NSF, organized a planning conference titled "Liberal Studies and the Integrated Engineering Education of ABET 2000," held April 6-7, 2002.The goal of the conference was to explore and develop methods to achieve in engineering education the thorough integration, broad program outcomes, and ongoing assessment regimes mandated under EC 2000.

Attendees were drawn from industry, professional engineering societies, and engineering educators.

During the first full day of discussions, the attendees worked as a whole to generate a consensus about the implications of EC2000 for curricular reform and about areas of opportunity and need.

For the second day of discussions, the members broke into four working groups, each charged with discussion and inquiry into an identifiable area where best practices and models are available but where crucial needs still exist.

With the conference completed, volunteer authors drew from their group's discussions and from additional research to create a set of reports that will provide the foundation for creating an enduring body of knowledge and practice that will guide engineering educators nationally.

The reports based on the discussions are available for download in PDF format, which can be read with the Adobe Acrobat Reader. They are:
